Gabriel Pernell
Software Developer/Data Scientist
About Me
I am a software engineer and data scientist with a neuroscience background, with over 3 years of experience coding focused on machine learning.
Experience
– Coded scripts in python to read/write .csv files and feed to natural language processing tools including ChatGPT4
(using openai package)
– Used R and Python to perform statistical analysis and data visualization on results of ChatGPT4 study
– Built online experiment from scratch using Javascript, HTML, and PHP to be used for testing blind individuals.
– Conducted experiment (with sighted and blind participants) investigating the impact of first-person sensory experience on perceptions of seeing and development.
Data Science/Machine Learning Intern at CUF Hospitals in Lisbon, Portugal:
– Worked with data in SQL and Python, libraries used included numpy, pandas, seaborn, and scikit-learn.
– Preprocessed and cleaned 10 data tables with 20 million rows to filter and manipulate datasets
– Conducted data analysis, feature engineering and visualization for effective communication of data-driven insights
– Trained algorithms to solve a variety of supervised and unsupervised machine learning problems using scikit-learn
Final model had a 91% accuracy to predict customer churn at CUF.

Discord Music Bot With Speech Recognition
Python, Discord.py, SpeechRecognition, OpenAI
– Developed a custom Discord music bot capable of recognizing speech commands using the Google Speech
Recognition API.
– Implemented voice-activated music search on YouTube, along with commands like ”!play,” ”!skip,” and
”!stop listening.”
– Integrated OpenAI’s GPT for generating AI responses to user questions and ElevenLabs for voice synthesis,
enabling the bot to speak answers aloud.
– Deployed the bot in a Discord server with over 80 members, where it continuously listens for commands, efficiently
managing music playback and verbal interactions in real-time.

Website Experiment for Blind Individuals
JavaScript, HTML, CSS, JsPsych
– I single-handedly built an online experiment from scratch, using HTML, Javascript, and PHP.
– Taught myself Javascript in order to write the website file containing over 400 lines of code.
– Used PHP files to add features to the website such as saving user data and progress.
– Deployed the website to be used on 30+ participants at the National Federation of the Blind Convention 2024.
